As Mayor of Iowa City, I am pleased to welcome you to our Home Page. Iowa City encourages citizens to access information and become involved in our community. This Home Page is our latest source of information about our city. The Library, Cable TV, and the Civic Center are still well-used information sources.
Founded in 1839 and located on the Iowa River, Iowa City was the first capitol of the State of Iowa. The Old Capitol on The University of Iowa campus and the home of Robert Lucas, the first Iowa Governor, are both open for public viewing. Iowa City is the county seat for Johnson County and has a population of approximately 63,000.
As home to The University of Iowa, we have many diverse activities usually available only in larger cities. Actors, musicians, writers, and artists are actively plying their crafts, and the rest of the community is able to enjoy their efforts. We also are home to excellent hospitals, medical research, and scientific research. Our outstanding public schools, city parks, recreation centers, Senior Center, and Public Library are also part of Iowa City's public image. Our citizens are active volunteers in all of the above, as well as in neighborhood associations, City Council-appointed boards and commissions, and human service agencies.
In addition to education, Iowa City has a business and industry segment that continues to grow. Our airport is becoming the Iowa City Industrial Air Park, and we are about to adopt a new Airport Master Plan.
We, in City government, encourage visitors and Iowa City residents to explore our community through our Home Page. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact us at our office located at 410 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, IA 52240 or via electronic mail at the following address: council@iowa-city.org
Sincerely, Ernest W. Lehman Mayor, City of Iowa City
