In communal times, picturesque South Amana (established in 1856) was the site of two major rail line depots, making it the center of commerce for the villages. Legend has it that one of South Amana's two general stores was robbed by Jesse James and his gang in 1877. That store is still open today as Fern Hill Gifts and Quilts.
