Upon retirement, he moved to his Iowa City home called Plum Grove.
When Iowa joined the Union in 1846, Iowa City became the first State
Capitol. Before statehood, the Capital of the Iowa territory was Burlington.
The University of Iowa was chartered within the first two months of statehood.
